![]() On average, the number of shows that have been broadcast during prime time by the three main networks ( CBS, NBC and ABC) per season has ranged between 63 and 75 shows between the 1987-02 seasons. It was the repeal of fin-syn that ultimately made newer broadcast networks such as UPN and The WB financially interesting for their highly vertically integrated parent media conglomerates Paramount Pictures ( Viacom) and Time Warner, respectively. Following the severe changes in the television landscape, such as the rise of the Fox network and cable television, the Financial Interest and Syndication Rules were abolished completely in 1993. Ĭontroversial from the very beginning, the fin-syn rule was relaxed slightly during the 1980s. The rules also led to the destruction of numerous older television tapes in the 1970s what could not be sold or given away to an independent syndicator was thrown out or recycled to recover silver content. Others argue the rules made the work of independent television production companies much more difficult because smaller companies could never afford the deficit financing required unless they received network assistance. Some argue the rules brought about a golden era of independent television production by companies such as MTM Enterprises ( The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and Norman Lear's Tandem Productions ( All in the Family). The rules changed the power relationships between networks and television producers, who often had to agree to exorbitant profit participation in order to have their shows aired. The rules also led to the networks spun-off their syndicated divisions, like CBS' CBS Enterprises was later renamed as Viacom in 1971 and later spun-off, ABC's ABC Films was sold to its five executives and later renamed as Worldvision Enterprises and NBC's syndicated division NBC Films was later sold to National Telefilm Associates for $7.5 million, both occurred in March 1973. The rules also prohibited networks from airing syndicated programming they had a financial stake in. The FCC sought to prevent the Big Three television networks from monopolizing the broadcast landscape by preventing them from owning any of the programming that they aired in prime time. The Financial Interest and Syndication Rules, widely known as the fin-syn rules, were a set of rules imposed by the Federal Communications Commission in the United States in 1970. The result is an interest-rate spiral that is more damaging to world output and employment than these countries may wish to see collectively.Set of rules imposed by the Federal Communications Commission in 1970 If the BOE and ECB respond by further raising their interest rates, they export a bit of extra inflation back to the United States and to other economies. For example, when the Fed raises its interest rate, if the BOE and the ECB do not respond, the pound and the euro would depreciate against the US dollar, leading to higher import prices and adding to the already high inflation. ![]() The problem with this approach is that an interest-rate hike by any major central bank has the effect of exporting inflation to other countries, forcing other central banks to raise interest rates more than they otherwise would have done. Across the Atlantic, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England have also vowed to raise interest rates to deal with the highest inflation seen in decades. To ensure that inflation expectations remain anchored at a low level, the Fed would prefer to err on the side of being too aggressive, rather than risk doing too little. For example, in view of the US Federal Reserve’s prolonged underestimation of the persistence of US inflation, Chair Jerome Powell’s recent vow to continue hiking rates, despite the risk of recession, seems reasonable. This scenario can still be avoided, but the window of opportunity is closing.Īggressive interest-rate increases designed to combat high inflation at home make sense in isolation. NEW YORK – The world is facing the risk that major central banks will undertake competitive interest-rate hikes that may look desirable for their countries individually but could drag the world economy into an unnecessary recession. I searched for Audio Expression in the brush search box, picked one at random, and turned on Gotye's "Somebody I Used to Know," a song with lots of volume fluctuations. Enabling the feature was actually simpler than I had imagined it would be, thanks to a helpful dialog box that walked me through the steps. When you use selected brushes and play sound, like music, the brush reacts to the change in noise. The most bizarre new feature is called Audio Expression. A few of its interface tweaks are nice to have, but they're not momentous improvements. What's New in Painter 2016As I said, Painter 2016 is all about getting more brushes and tools, and some of them seem a little over the top. You'll notice from Corel's handy comparison chart of Painter 2016, 2015, X3, and 12 that the switch from 2015 to 2016 is really about having more brushes and tools, while the jump from previous versions is much more significant in terms of performance and support. And when you're painting digitally, responsiveness is crucial. It makes the program run much faster and smoother. Mac users who didn't bother with Painter 2015 will find the $249 well spent, as they'll finally get 64-bit support, which was only added last year. Whether an upgrade is worthwhile now depends on how long ago you last bought Painter and whether you run Mac or Windows. You'll need your original serial number, and the upgrade won't work on Academic versions (or Trials, OEM, and Not for Resale products). The upgrade price is $229, and upgrades are valid for customers using software as old as Painter 7. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software. It is exciting to have a new outlet for musical ideas that is compatible with various modes of self-production, as the COVID-19 pandemic has eliminated all my performance opportunities (the same is true for so many other musicians, as well). Those have been fun to produce as I document my journey learning more about what the Neutron can do in preparation for creating either fixed media or live pieces with it at some point in the coming year. The videos I’ve included in this blog entry, and the others that I have posted to my Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok accounts, show the Neutron can do so many other things in conjunction with different hardware. I can even play my Neutron on its own, without attaching a keyboard, like it has a sonic heartbeat I can bring to life. And, even though the Neutron is electronic and produces a synthesized sound, there is something very naturalistic about the way it reacts to itself and evolves in the moment. Translations in context of Bleep bloop in English-Spanish from Reverso Context: A flying saucer drops out of the sky. Some of these connections are default settings on the instrument, but others can be created spontaneously using the patch bay. Because it is a modular synthesizer, the discrete components of its sound are interwoven and can manipulate each other. What I love the most about playing with the Neutron is the way it listens to itself, and makes me listen in new ways. The Neutron fits the physicality of my improvisatory style, honed in middle school and high school over hours of relentless electric guitar noodling, and, in this way, has shown me a new path to making electronic music. ![]() I could, of course, make a simulated instrument in Max/MSP that exhibits all these characteristics (and many more, because that program is basically limitless), but I don’t have the skills for that right now. The knobs have character and ‘give’ to them, the patch bay can get cluttered with wires, and I hear the Neutron’s sound respond, often unexpectedly, when I move my hands around the interface, experimenting with different combinations of effects and settings. Mediated through the computer screen, mouse, and keyboard, there is not as strong, if any, tactile connection between me and the sounds I’m creating, which is very different from all my experience playing instruments. I’ve written some fixed media pieces using DAWs (check out Mechanismus), and played around with Max/MSP and Supercollider, which are incredibly flexible, coding-based programs, but, in addition to being hard for me to learn, I get stuck with the physical abstraction of the experience. Chris and I did an interview with experimental bassist Gahlord Dewald a couple months after Djentdemic was premiered in February 2016, and I even admit I’m not sure if Djentdemic is an electronic piece at all (Gahlord even teases me on air for saying something so ridiculous!). When I wrote the first of these works, Djentdemic for percussionist Christopher Sies, a few years ago, I wasn’t really sure if it ‘counted’ as an electro-acoustic piece because there was no fancy software at play. If you look at my new Works List page, you’ll see that there are not many electronic pieces listed there, and most of them are for amplified acoustic instruments. I’ve always been very interested in electronic music but insecure about my abilities in the medium. |
